Food Review: Rusty Bean & Batter, Kuching.

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

The current café hype in Kuching definitely goes hands down to Rusty Bean and Batter, in which its foodporn is pretty common in my newsfeed recently.

Although it's conveniently situated just 5 minutes away from where I stay, I finally made a spontaneous trip there when trying to decide lunch places (happens all the time). I did however, stumble upon it once when the shopping mall opposite had literally no parking spaces at all on a wonderful weekend, though at that moment the place was still under renovation.

They did a pretty good job on the interior in my opinion. Atmosphere-wise, it's definitely a place worth sitting down to spark a conversation.

Rusty Morning (RM18.90)

I must say it's presented really well. And I liked how Kuching finally has a few places serving such Western breakfast and brunch.

The poached egg was just heavenly gorgeous. Pancakes were really fluffy and nice too, and I liked the mushrooms in between the layers of the pancakes.

On the other hand, the hollandaise sauce was quite a disappointment. Though fluffy, the pancakes were a little too sweet for this dish, which may have overshadowed other elements.

I'm sure a lot of people would find this a very interesting dish since it's quite rare around here, and would find it delish. But in all honesty, I personally felt the hollandaise sauce (its main spotlight) just wasn't right/rich enough or just didn't blend well, and it wasn't up to the value of what I paid for. Each ingredient just tasted like it's on its own, there wasn't a unique taste.

Red Devil (RM11.90)

My friend ordered this sandwich, "Raphael" (RM16.90). I dont have a close up photo of it, but there's a brief look of it if you refer to the top photo. If my memory serves me well, it's ham with lettuce and tomato in cranberry sauce, with an option of either Focaccia bread or pancakes. The focaccia tasted pretty alright, needs a little bit more toasting.

Loved the idea.

But this sandwich was quite a joke.

2 big pieces of Focaccia "filled" with 2 pieces of ham, one piece of lettuce and 2 slices of tomato. Oh right, there was cranberry sauce too, which could have been evenly spreaded instead of being drizzled just once across the whole sandwich. It's fine if the bread wasnt sliced well, but I really thought the sandwich filling was not generous enough. And with that in mind, you could barely taste anything distinct about it. And again, paying such an amount I would expect something better than literally, just eating bread alone.

Now coming to the drinks, Red Devil (as shown in the photo above) is a very diluted juice. It looks rich due to the dragon fruit added, but don't be deceived. It's just too awfully.... diluted.

Service was generally well. Decor was nice, loved the fresh flowers, number cans, and their unique logo-printed tableware. And I have a thing for plain water with lemon, so I liked that they have it.

Did not get to try the coffee and other sweet stuff, so I cant comment on those.

But really, sandwich and juice.. you've disappointed me. As for the Rusty Breakfast, give it a try at least since it's pretty special and rare around here.

Do bear in mind that food and drinks are on a slightly pricier side.

Food Review: Breakfast at Gourmet Sausage

Thursday, August 30, 2012

I can still vaguely remember years ago, I told my dad I wanted to have English Breakfast when he asked me to suggest places to eat. Places were pretty limited then, or practically none to my knowledge. In the end all we had were toast and sandwiches.

Recently, I read about this "Free Breakfast" promotion by Gourmet Sausage so my sister and I decided to go try it out.

The "Free Breakfast" is available with purchase of any drinks and contains a piece of bacon, baked beans, and a sunny side up. You may choose to add on other ingredients such as sausages, omelette, and more.

Overall, it was pretty alright except that my order was messed up and it took ages for the food to be prepared despite the fact that it was not crowded. But since the breakfast menu just started, such mistakes can be forgiven I suppose.

Food Review: iChef Cuisine Restaurant

Friday, August 24, 2012

iChef Cuisine Restaurant is located between City One & Premier 101. They have a bright pink signboard, so you wont miss it.

They serve a wide selection of food ranging from Oriental Cuisine to Western Cuisine and Pizzas. Wagyu Beef can be found here as well.

Thai Mango Prawn Salad, RM25.

Sweet, sour, and a little spicy. Huge prawns. Personally, I really like the taste but it's a little too watery and pricey for a small portion of salad.

Spaghetti Bolognese topped with Cheese Powder, RM13.

Taste-wise, normal. Portion-wise, small.

Chicken Boxing, RM9.

A little too dry, and the meat is not completely cooked yet.

Overall, the interior has a nice ambience, but the food is rather pricey. Maybe when Groupon has a deal on it, I'll visit it next time.

Food Review: Alfresco Wine | Dine

Thursday, August 9, 2012

I've heard a lot from people about this place, so I decided to give it a try.

Alfresco Wine & Dine serves mainly western food and alcohol. Beers including Hoegaarden, Strongbow, etc. can be found here.

The signboard is very visible from the back of Hock Lee Centre so you would not miss it.

The interior is pretty nice. Has a nice ambience suitable for family and friends to chill out for a bit.

Chef's Salad, RM16. Fresh lettuce served with sliced cheese, chicken ham, eggs and tomatoes in thousand island dressing.

It's a really huge portion. By just having this, it would already be enough to fill your stomach up to a fair amount.

Spaghetti Bolognese served with Giant Meatballs, RM22.

I'll be cruel on this dish, the meatballs contribute to its failure. The meatballs are too tough and dry, probably overcooked. Worst meatballs I have ever eaten to be honest. My sister choked on this as well.

Spaghetti Pesto, RM18.

Happy Hour Combo, RM20.

Combination of onion rings, chicken pops, meatballs (Ugh), squid rings, and french fries.

A really big portion indeed, suitable if you'd like a bite along with your drink.

Overall, the food was okay. I was told that the other mains are more famous than the pastas. If you've tried it out, drop me a comment below.

Food Review: Howdy Grillhouse

Monday, July 2, 2012 | |

My love for pork ribs probably came from my papa.

Initially we go for pork ribs at this place called My Restaurant, but then we shifted to Porkies. And now since the opening of Howdy Grillhouse, it has always been there.

One thing about their pork ribs is that, it's super juicy. Glazed with their homemade barbecue sauce, it's just simply delicious and finger-licking good.

They have different portions for the ribs, ranging from M to XXXL. This is an XXXL size ribs. It's priced at RM88.80 and recommended for 4-5 people.

Personally, other than the Pork Ribs, I do not fancy other dishes from this restaurant. But I like how the fries are sprinkled with spices, adds a flavour to it.
